Fire is divided into three zones (see map).
North Zone:
- 272,490 acres
- 5% contained
- Cost to date: $13,745,367
- Wednesday several structures lost in Greer Wednesday night from a significant run N into the E fork of the Little Colorado around 1700. DC-10 dropped retardant in support of suppression efforts around Greer.
- Fuel treatments in Eagar & Greer assisted in protection efforts for firefighters & properties.
- Thursday extreme fire behavior with frequent spotting. Rapid rates of spread in all fuel types.
- Crews will secure W perimeter S of Greer through line construction & burnouts and continue line construction & burnout from Escudilla S to Luna, NM.
- Structure protection ongoing in Alpine, Nutrioso, Greer, South Fork, & outlying areas.
- Structure damage assessment team working in Greer, Nutrioso, & Alpine. Reassigning resources to Zones 2 & 3 (W & E).
- Evacuations still in effect for Greer, Sunrise, Blue River, Alpine, Nutrioso, & subdivisions along Hwy. 180 & 191; also, all areas S of Hwy. 260 & E of Greer, including South Fork & portions of Eagar.
- Hwy. 260 closed following evacuation.
- 2,500 homes; 400 businesses; 1,000 outbuildings threatened. 29 homes & 34 outbuildings destroyed; 1 outbuilding damaged.
- Major smoke impacts in communities close to the fire & NE into New Mexico.
- Powerlines that supply power to Catron County (NM), the Blue River, Nutrioso, the Alpine area, & 60% of the power to Tucson continue to be threatened.
- 3 injuries to date.
- Dugger Hughes’ SWA-IMT1 assumes command of the West Zone Friday, Jim Pendleton’s NWA-IMT1 of the East Zone Friday. A full division of resources will be turned over to Pendleton tomorrow. Total acres burned: Apache-Sitgreaves NFs (370,026 A.); San Carlos Indian Reservation (4,571 A.), White Mountain Apache Indian Reservation (4,196 A.), AZ State lands (7,107 A.).
- Apache-Sitgreaves NFs closed.
South Zone (includes west and east zones):
- 113,963 acres
- Cost to date: $5,320,321
- Creeping, smoldering, & active backing fire wth short, flanking upslope runs. Some active ground fire & some crown fires in unburned islands.
- Significant heat in canyons on W side of fire. Some spotting.
- 20 homes, 25 businesses, 73 outbuildings threatened.
- 4 businesses destroyed to date.
- Transfer of command to Hughes’ IMT1 & Pendleton’s IMT1.
