Yesterday:
- Thursday’s winds were the lightest seen since the start of the Wallow Fire, leading to less active burning. More crews and engines arrived on Zone 2 yesterday. Structure protection crews remained in place last night.
Today:
- Wind speeds are expected to increase this afternoon. While the today’s wind speeds will still be lower than earlier in the fire. The combination of wind, dry fuels and low relative humidity is expected to increase fire activity.
- Firefighters will be working to keep the fire south of Highway 180 and west of the major transmission lines. The strategy for the fire’s eastern flank includes establishing a containment area using a combination of natural barriers, line building and burnout operations.
- New Mexico’s National Guard has joined the effort with approximately 150 Soldiers and Airmen. The New Mexico National guard is assisting emergency management agencies with necessary evacuations and safety and security issues.
- Public Meeting: There is a public meeting tonight at the Community Center in Luna, New Mexico. The meeting is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m.
- More Information: Fire information for Zone 2 is located at the Catron County Fairgrounds in Reserve, New Mexico. Phones were installed yesterday. For more information about Zone 2 of the Wallow Fire, please call 575-533-6928.
- Closures: There is an area closure on the western portions of Quemado, Reserve and Glenwood Ranger Districts. The closure will remain in effect until post-fire threats to public safety are eliminated. The closure is necessary to protect the public and provide for firefighter safety while working to contain the Wallow Fire.
