#WallowFire S. Brown: Zone 2 Update East side of the Fire 06/12/11 10:05:30 AM

#WallowFire Zone 2 Update East side of the Fire 06/12/11 10:05:30 AM

Sher Brown, Local Fire Liaison

Management of suppression activities on the Wallow Fire is divided into three areas, or zones.  This update provides information about activities occurring on the East Zone of the fire.  For information about the other zones, please visit www.InciWeb.org or www.fs.fed.us/r3/asnf.
Yesterday:  There was moderate fire activity along much of the eastern perimeter.  More resources, including engines arrived.  Structure protection crews remained in place last night.
Crews ignited unburned fuels along the 281 road last night to strengthen containment lines.  While there is more burnout work to be done in that area, the work that was completed held last night.
A public meeting was held in Luna New Mexico Saturday night.  Zone 2 Wallow Fire Incident Commander Jeff Pendleton and Operations Section Chief Dean Vendrasco shared information about the firefighting activity that has been taking place along the eastern edge of the Wallow Fire.
Today:  South-Southwest 15-25 mile per hour winds are expected around midday, with gusts up to 35.  The combination of wind, dry fuels and low relative humidity is likely to increase fire activity.
Firefighters are working day, swing and night shifts to provide structure protection and to build and improve containment lines.  Some of the crews are staying in a spike camp at Hannagan Meadows, and other resources are staged at Luna lake to shorten response times.  The objectives for Zone 2 include keeping the fire south of Highway 180 and west of the major transmission lines.
A helibase at Luna is providing support to both zones 1 and 2 of the Wallow Fire
Approximately 150 Soldiers and Airmen with the New Mexico National guard are assisting emergency management agencies with necessary evacuations and safety and security issues.
Public Meeting:  There is a public meeting scheduled for 7:00pm at the Community Center in Reserve, New Mexico on Monday night.
More Information:  The fire information office for Zone 2 is located at the Catron County Fairgrounds in Reserve, New Mexico.  For more information about Zone 2 of the Wallow Fire, please call 575-533-6928.
Closures:  There is an area closure on the western portions of Quemado, Reserve and Glenwood Ranger Districts.  The closure will remain in effect until post-fire threats to public safety are eliminated.  The closure is necessary to protect the public and provide for firefighter safety while working to contain the Wallow Fire.
