#WallowFire Catron County Manager update 06/21/11 11:47 NM
Bill Aymar:
This morning's brief at the Incident Command Post (ICP) pointed out the very real difficulties of fighting fires in areas like the Blue - they had an extreme issue. Let's just say if you've seen the new GMC Sierra ad with the skycrane dumping water on it - well, you get the idea. Luna seems to be holding up well with the VFD keeping track of the issues moment by moment, and Luna remains under the evacuation order. We are hopeful of the possibility of lifting the order, but by the same token we don't want to let folks back in then have to re-evacuate them if the Blue decides to act up. It's a balancing act.
There was a potential HazMat issue North of Luna that has subsequently been determined to be a non-issue - but with the active fire area and the potential for harm to citizens and firefighters we can't take a chance at all. The Catron County Fire Chief's Association is holding their monthly meeting today (though I expect it to be a shortened version) in Reserve. Stay Safe!
