Gila National Forest Announces Area Closure for Public Safety
Silver City, New Mexico; June 10, 2011--Due to the large fire activity on the Wallow Fire and the Very High fire danger, the Gila National Forest will implement an area closure on the western portions of the Quemado, Reserve and Glenwood Ranger Districts effective Friday, June 10, 2011, at 11:59 p.m.
“The area closure is a precautionary measure taken to protect the public and provide for firefighter safety while working to contain the Wallow Fire. This closure will remain in effect until post-fire threats to public safety are eliminated,” says Kelly Russell/ Forest Supervisor on the Gila National Forest. During the closure, fire response personnel from local communities and from within the State of New Mexico will be assisting firefighters in containment of the wildfire.
The area closure (Closure Order 06-294) prohibits going into or being upon any portion of the Gila and Apache National Forests as follows: “All National Forest System lands, roads, and trails within the proclaimed boundary of the Gila National Forest and the Apache National Forest administered by the Gila National Forest, which occur within the State of New Mexico (Attached Map) contained within Quemado, Reserve and Glenwood Ranger Districts of the Gila National Forest – starting from:
the northern Quemado District boundary from the Arizona-New Mexico State Line east to N.M. State Highway 32; south on NM State Highway 32 to NM 12 at Apache Creek; then south and west on NM 12 to U.S. Highway 180, then south on U.S. Highway 180 to Catron County Roads C009, Forest Road 703, and Forest Road 168 west to the Arizona state line.
Any violation of this prohibition is punishable by a fine of not more than $5,000.00 for individuals and $10,000.00 for organizations and/or imprisonment for not more than six (6) months. [Title 16 USC 551, Title 18 USC 3885, Title 18 USC 3571, Title 18 USC 3581].
