#WallowFire Sher Brown Local Fire Liaison update

#WallowFire Sher Brown Local Fire Liaison update

Reserve NM
  • Gov Martinez and Secretary Duval came to the EOC this morning to see how IC operations work. She was briefed by Emergency Officer Bill Aymar and by other members of the EOC team..
  • Potable water is a big concern here in Reserve. The arrival of all the resources have taxed the Reserve water system. The pumps are running full time and currently are keeping up with the demand, but the ongoing strain on the system is a definite concern.
  • Another concern is that possible rolling black outs may effect cell service. This is an issue because people in the field, such as the officers dealing with livestock, are dependent on cell phones in case of a rapid extrication of livestock.
  • Regarding livestock, the ranching community is getting ready to move animals. They are waiting for trigger points before making the final decision to move. The larger ranchers are mostly taking care of themselves, but if drifting the cattle doesn't work, there is a plan in place to load and move livestock. There are pens throughout the county that are prepared to receive horses, etc.
  • The governor's concern is that people are going to wait too long before they decide to move their livestock. Where is the tipping point? The longer people wait, the harder it is for the fire fighters to do their job.
  • The governor is also concerned that the public may become desensitized to the warnings. The fire line keeps zigzagging and we're thinking it's coming and then it's not and then it is and then it's not.
  • The governor wants to take this calm time to educate the public on how EOC works and that we really do have a plan and that we are prepared.
