AZ Gov. Jan Brewer

Gov. Brewer's comments from Springerville 2 hours ago:

just arrived in Springerville, AZ after viewing the Wallow Fire by air. The photo is from my cell phone. The fire has now burned over 140,000 acres with 0% containment. It’s moving fast, and is fueled by strong wind and dry vegetation. Over 1,100 firefighters are battling the fire. My thoughts and prayers are with the evacuees and with the firefighters and emergency responders battling this fire.

  1. The big mound of smoke is the plume. The problem with big plumes like that is they get heavy with particulates, then collapse. When a plume collapses it pushes the air outwards, fanning the fire - kKind of like blowing on your campfire to make the flames grow, except with really bad results.
